Thank you for this article. It came at a time when I was fighting the winter blah's and had a great lack of inspiration. My project is going to be to try each one of the projects listed in this article. Thanks again!

Not dissimilar to the Challenge I have set fellow Club members. Ours is to take 1 x photo per week (=52) throughout the year. Any topic they wish. These should become a simple AV for showing at a Club night in Jan 2012.

Having tried this last year many of us did not stay the course. More difficult than it first appears. Finding something that you can do anywhere you are, every week, is the first step. Then keeping at least your little pocket camera with you to make sure you keep up the pace.

It really is very well worthwhile having projects such as this as it certainly does keep you motivated to be out and about with your camera.

I'm taking part in a month long challenge using one prime lens only. I've chosen the 50mm and combined with a cropped sensor D300s it's not the easiest to use, well at least not to start with. The 365 sounds a hard slog but I'll give it a go.

photo a day is a god one - we have been photo(ing) our children everyday - one is 5 in May the other has just turned 2 this month - My tip is to work with someone close or a fellow photographer so you can remind each other on those busy days we missed one day when my daugter was a few months old because we were decorating my parents house!! Fortunately she didn't do much back then and didn't change much over the few hours between shots. I have also been doing the monthly(ish) shot from one location - I chose a gateway in a wall which opens out to a view of the lake district - My tip here is try to include a variation of elements which change at different times/pace. I didn't really think of this at the time but as I look back over the photos for the last year I have noticed things changing which I did not really focus on when chosing my spot and this has made slide showing the images so much better as it shows a more gradual change and adds a "movie" style feel to the still images.

Birds, Bugs n mammals are my 'bag'. At a recent camera club night that showed top quality pics from all around the UK I thought (yet again) "If I see one more butterfly hanging off some uninteresting flower or another 'bird on a stick', dragonfly on an uninteresting grass stem or moth chucked onto a leaf, especially a dead leaf, my 'sensor' is going to explode. Today's camera gear/imaging programmes are capable of such astonishing clarity/quality that if the object, bird, bug, insect isn't pin sharp and well exposed you might want to reconsider what to do with your camera. I am seeing the same things in my own photographs although I have noticed some occasional attempts to make a 'picture' rather than a dull 'record' so this year I am going to try and be much more creative. It's not as though all this is new to me, I have been pointing my cameras at wildlife for 50 years so with this in mind I am looking forward to seeing what happens to my sensor this year !

Thanks for this. A few of us are trying a photo a day but it is often honoured in the breach! We have themes for the month and special days: members make their own interpretations. For February we have the themes of architecture, on the move, people and fire. Special dates - 3rd for Chinese New year of the rabbit; 8th Boy Scout day!; 14th St Valentine's. Every month, 8th is phone camera day and 17th is B&W day.

I have been doing the creative self-portraits. I'm doing one a month, so I can get creative suggestions from my "fans". It makes the whole process more interactive, and generates interest. I just started in the new year, so I only have 2 so far. Here they are if you're curious: http://www.traciehowe.com/category/themed-self-portraits

:...bright lights in dark places" This project means going out at midnight in the city and shooting places where there is only a single light source. The challenge is selecting and using only 1 lens to shoot the entire night and to do it hand held. Then I repeat the shoot at another suburb using a different lens. The purpose is to learn how to use only what I have to make an image if it means moving in close of far away. Also shooting at night presents its own set of problems. Since I'm not much of a sleeper this is perfect for me as I'm usually out for 3 hrs. I shoot in both nice weather at night and even when it rains. I've added to the project a model that I will sometimes take to make the shoot even more difficult. NSFW http://www.flickr.com/photos/62986999@N00/sets/72157624926654478/

Great ideas, I started the 365 day challange on new years day and have so far stuck with it but am getting a bit bored with it. Today I went out and started the 'shoot from the hip' project, got a couple of shoots I was really pleased with too!

I have been researching my family tree for a couple of years and thought it would be interesting to photograph houses & streets in my home town where my ancesters used to live, your article has given me the incentive to start the project. It has also given me the idea to start a seperate project of photographing my home town which celebrates its ancient Guild charter in 2012. Any tips on street photography you could give me when be most welcome.
